Like most people can attest, the first encounter with cancer is overwhelming! My first time was no different. I did what the doctors in New Jersey told me to do, without too many questions. It felt like a spiraling, out-of-control roller coaster ride—the constant treatments and side effects of the treatments—all I could do was hang on! Finally when it was all over, I felt lucky and blessed to have come through alright, and I made a mental note: If I had cancer again, I was going to be more informed, and proactive in my treatment. I was going to maintain some control over my situation!
Now, I’m on my second go around with breast cancer, and I’m blessed to have the facilities available to me here at PCI. The doctors, nurses, and specialists have created a ‘healing’ environment, and adjuvant therapies have been offered to enhance my recuperative abilities. One of the more exciting optional therapies provided by PCI has been the massage therapy.
It seems to me the mind to body connection in recovering from an illness, or surviving the treatment of a disease, is critical. More than once I’ve read about or been told about the mental attitude in conquering diseases, and it has been my goal this time around to work on that part of my recuperation—especially because it is the one thing I do have control over right now! Through my massage sessions with Amy, I have found relief from the mental and physical side effects of my cancer treatments. I have maintained a sense of control over my health, and that has been a real blessing!
I encourage anyone who has considered massage therapy to give it a chance. It was, and still is, of great help to me. Thanks to all of the staff at PCI—you guys are the best!

As always,
Deb Costello
