PCI’s Dog Days of Summer

What images come to mind when you think about a therapist? Would it be a distinguished looking man or woman, well dressed and well spoken with fantastic listening skills? Someone who exudes confidence and competency might fit the bill. Or could it be someone more casual, relaxed and blessed with a wonderful sense of humor? Any of those qualities would certainly be therapeutic, but a little ordinary compared to the therapists we have at PCI.

Let’s picture our favorite therapists as those with cold noses, wagging tails and hearts full of unconditional love.  They come in all sizes, shapes, colors and breeds. These are the Pet Therapy Dogs who come to visit us at Peninsula Cancer Institute.  They come with their qualifications and shot records in order. These furry characters are all certified by Therapy Dogs International and have successfully met all the qualifications   necessary to give and receive as much love as they can during each and every visit.

So you ask why Pet Therapy? There are multiple reasons for bringing   therapy dogs into hospitals, nursing homes and  cancer clinics like ours.  First of all, people can feel lonely and isolated when they are diagnosed with cancer. Even the people closest to them cannot fully understand where they are or what they are going through unless they have been there.  Along comes our therapist who needs no lengthy explanations or special care   concerning his feelings, just a friendly pat on the head and some gentle petting is more than enough.  Of course, a dog cookie or two never hurts! These angels with tails come  prepared to break the monotony of having to sit quietly all day receiving chemotherapy. They give people a common interest which provides for easy conversation.  This  allows strangers to reach out and make friends with those around them.  Our furry therapists don’t care what age you are, what your level of education might be or the amount of money in your bank account. You can’t live on the wrong side of the street or wear the wrong clothes, you can just be who you are and be loved as is, no strings attached.
