Nutrition and Cancer

Why Nutrition?

“Worries go down better with soup.” (Jewish proverb)

Eating well and getting enough nutrients is often a concern voiced by patients and their families. Good nutrition can make a difference during the treatment and management of cancer. A nourished body is better able to fight infection, handle side effects of treatment, rebuild healthy body tissues, maintain or regain strength and have an overall improved feeling of well-being including less depression and anxiety. Good nutrition can help your treatment be more effective.

PCI has a variety of nutrition information available: booklets, handouts, books, Internet access, etc. If you have questions or suggestions, please send them through your nurse to the Registered Dietitian (RD). Nutrition services will continue to develop as you communicate your needs and desire for it. There is more and more nutrition and food information out there; sorting through it can be overwhelming and downright misleading. Let’s sort it out together and make sense of it for your particular situation. Many parts of your cancer experience may feel out of control to you; eating well is one area where you can exert a positive influence.

While I have your attention (!), let me say that eating more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and basic wholesome food is almost always the place to start in improving your diet. Less processed and refined foods is safe to say that we can all benefit from. Excessive supplementation is rarely useful and could be harmful.

The Dietitian is part of your health care team at PCI and can help you and your family develop food plans to optimize your nutritional status. When you request to see and/or are referred to the Dietitian, a visit will be scheduled to assess your needs and provide information to help meet those needs. Additional meetings can be scheduled as needed. Use this resource – ask questions – get informed.

I look forward to meeting you and working with you. I would hope that I could offer you useful tips and information to help you feel better and do better; I know you have lots to teach me about your experience as well!
